Each year between January and March, each of the armed services in the United States announces the best from among their top food service operations. The Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy honor their best messes with the Hennessy, Connelly, GCFSEA, Hill and Ney awards. These awards encourage military cooks and bakers to serve higher quality meals to their patrons. Although the award is given to the general mess or dining hall, by participating in the annual competitions, the patrons are the true winners. It's a win-win situation for all involved: The unit that operates the mess is recognized for excellence, the patrons eat five-star meals and the cooks develop a heightened sense of commitment towards their mission, which is to provide nutritional support to America's combat forces. |
