MSC Announces Food Service Excellence Winners for 1998

WASHINGTON (NWSA) -- Vice Adm. Jim Perkins, Commander, Military Sealift Command (MSC), recently announced the 1998 Food Service Management Excellence Award winners for outstanding food service aboard MSC ships.

Fleet oiler USNS Laramie won in the large ship category, and ocean-going tug USNS Narragansett won in the small ship category. Fleet oiler USNS Walter S. Diehl and hospital ship USNS Comfort were the runners-up in the large and small category, respectively.

Formal presentation of the awards will be made March 26 by Perkins at the International Food Service Executives Association Annual Conference and Seminar in Norfolk.

The Food Service Management Excellence Award was established in 1992 to recognize the best food service operations aboard large and small Military Sealift Command ships. Criteria for the award includes food service preparation, administration, management, safety, facilities, training, sanitation and solid waste management.

The International Food Service Executives Association is a food service industry trade association whose members include executive chefs, operators, dietitians, consultants, managers and owners of catering firms, restaurants, hotels and clubs.
