Submarine Force Food Service Award Winners Announced

By JO3 Anthony J. Falvo
Commander of Submarines, Atlantic Public Affairs

NORFOLK, Va. (NWSA) -- The Submarine Force won eight 1998 Edward F. Ney Memorial Awards for Food Service Excellence, letting the Navy know that Submarine Sailors are among the best fed in the Navy. Winners were recently announced in Norfolk. The Ney Awards, given annually in conjunction with the International Food Service Executive Association (IFSEA), recognize excellence in Navy food service programs.

USS Springfield (SSN 761), homeported in Groton, Conn., captured the first place award for submarines. "This really feels great," said MSC (SS) Marti Mangiello. "We really brought a lot of pressure upon ourselves and it's a great feeling to bring this home." Springfield is the first East Coast submarine to win the first place award for submarines since USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) won the honor in 1983.

Other submarine force winners for 1998 included SUBASE Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, first place for medium ashore commands. Runners-up are:

  • USS Charlotte (SSN 766) (submarines)

  • USS Simon Lake (AS 33) (large afloat)

Honorable mentions for afloat commands (submarines) are:

  • USS Columbia (SSN 771)

  • USS Kamehameha (SSBN 642)

  • USS Nebraska (SSBN 739)

  • USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709).

"The response from the crew has been overwhelming," said Mangiello. "The congratulations haven't stopped yet. It feels good to bring this home for our submariners, SUBLANT and all the New England boats."
